Skimmers in the moonlight
Annual (30+ years) memorial day pilgrimage to Fox Island was mostly a blow out for fishing. Used the real low tides and kayaks to scout the edges of the flats for leads and drains.
Finally sunday evening the wind eased to 10, and shifted to SW, so I coaxed a friend to go night fishing in the the waning gibbous moon.
Went to a scouted spot. It was "taken", but the Skimmers did not object to us joining. Had 50-100 Skimmers around the boat for the next few hours, feeding in the moonlight. We were parked on a bait ball in about 4 feet of water.
No big red drum took our 10/0 hooks, but after lots of taps and tugs (and yes, one ray), we got out one small rod with small hooks, and started catching specs, rock and croaker in numbers. Biggest spec we landed was 22. Lost one that appeared much larger (and had taken a 10/0 hook).
For a while we had breaking fish all around us, and I threw a bucktail, and got hit by rock fish on almost every cast. Left at 0230 to go sleep, not because the fishing had stopped.
Sometimes, even in the dark, you stumble on magic.
