Smoot and I went out with the best musky guide in the world...Blane Chocklett. This Yankee traveled to VA......

We fished in OK temps for the tough as can be musky. The casting is tough...throwing a 14" fly comprised of 1/2 a deer tail with a 1/4 of a chicken added in on a 400 grain sinking head powered by an 11 weight all day long. The fish are there but they eat like me...whenever they want to ...but unlike me...they don't want to very often

When a fish happens to be interested...the blood really flows and if it does eat and stay hooked......the satisfaction is as good as it gets!

Great going guys. Friends of mine have been down with Blane had a great time.
Caught my first musky last Tuesday finally got some open water up here in the north.
Real thrill catching one on a fly.

Thanks guys. Both fish ate on the strip-in at distance, not in the eights. Soft strikes, like pulling the fly through brush. These fish are spooky..It's 6-1/2 hours of throwing 80-90 feet with a half hour for sandwich and water. Good timing and line management make the casting easier, but 10 feet running line out of tip-top and muscling it is rewarded with lots of issues in the back and joints later! Emerson's fish fought strong-great fish. Mine was very heavy with roe and real sluggish. They are big predators, and the James is flat loaded with them. Beautiful clear clean water, lots of wildlife of all kinds, long stretches of one of our floats had almost no buildings for miles. That place is also one heck of a smallmouth bass hangout. As Emerson has said, Blane is tops, has been guiding those waters 21 years. We had a blast-it's definitely a repeater!
